About Us - History

Established in 1965 as a faith-based non-profit organization, the Bay Area Rescue Mission provides shelter, meals, spiritual guidance, education, job skills training, and hope for a brighter tomorrow to the homeless and impoverished of the Greater Bay Area.  Today, the Mission shelters 325 homeless people every night while providing more than 1,500 meals every day through a network of more than 25,000 private individuals, corporate, religious, and civic organizations.

The Bridge of Hope

The Bay Area Rescue Mission is creating the Bridge of Hope as a Center for homeless women, women and their children, and families.  The Bridge of Hope will provide 400 beds for this fastest growing, most vulnerable segment of the Bay Area’s homeless population.  As a continuum of care, the Bridge of Hope will provide short term emergency shelter, comprehensive long term recovery programs, and transitional living facilities for those who have completed recovery programs.

Key elements of the Bridge of Hope will include:

A comprehensive intake and evaluation process (not to restrict admission, rather to insure that all areas of need are addressed)
Substance abuse and addiction recovery programs
Job skills training with hands on experience
Education and GED certification
College classes
Behavior management skills
Family management skills
Basic medical services, with limited specialized areas of practice such as OB/GYN, Dental, Optical, Chiropractic
Spiritual Guidance
